Pedro's operations do not fully develop until he learns that Lieutenant Freeman, U.S.N. has been detailed to make tissue tracing plans. While racking his brain for a method to secure these tracings, Villard drops into a theater. There he sees Professor Polari, a hypnotist, accomplish remarkable results along the line of the occult, using for his subject, a young woman whom he advertises as his daughter. Immediately, Villard enlists the services of the hypnotist. The young woman is placed in a trance and sent to Freeman's home in answer to an ad calling for a seamstress. She is employed; her movements in the house are controlled from a distance by Polari. Under his direction she steals the tracings. The theft is almost immediately discovered and to cover her act the girl sews the papers up in the lining of an opera cloak Mrs. Freeman intends to wear at the charity ball. Controlling the girl at a distance has been a great strain upon the hypnotist. At his side the spy is breathlessly awaiting for information. By means of telepathic waves the hypnotist reads the girl's thought: "At the Charity Ball, Mrs. Freeman - " The hypnotist can go no further. He collapses and dies, in the meantime Lieut. Freeman discovers the papers, in place of the genuine, he inserts a bundle of blank papers in the coat. Villard locates the decoy papers in the cloak. His accomplices are captured, but he escapes after a thrilling chase, to his country where he meets death tor failing in his mission. The girl, now free, is taken under the care of Freeman and his mother, and there is a suggestion of romance to come between the young people. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
