Years before, he had ridden the range in Texas and loved the girl, who was as fearless as a man. Once when he flirted with a pretty Mexican she stabbed him in the shoulder. Then one day they rode off. Beside their campfire they forgot everything but each other. Suddenly a terrific storm came up, and the cattle all around them were stampeded. There was but one thing to do, to try to keep ahead of them. Both on one horse they fled before the herd. But it was useless. John knew that the only thing that could save them was to shoot the horse and crouch under its body, taking their chance. He attempted to carry out the plan, but the horse ran away and he was thrown and hurt. Lasca them fell over him, and with her body protected him from the hoofs of the cattle. When they had passed and he regained consciousness, she was dead. He buried her there on the plain, and never forgot her. Written by Moving Picture World, July 7, 1917 See less
