Dr. Antonio appears, relieves the maiden's pain, and they fall in love with each other. During the days of convalescence. the lovers meet frequently until Lucy's brother Aubrey, appears and stops the love-making. Five months later we find Lucy, after pressure from her family, being married to Lord Claverton, and the Doctor joining the revolutionists in his despair at Lucy's desertion. Six years elapse, Lord Claverton dies, and Lucy is once more free to marry the man of her heart. Explanations take place, the lovers are united when the Doctor is called upon to join the citizen army and help to defend the barricades. A stirring battle in the streets occurs, and Dr. Antonio receives a fatal wound. Lucy finds her lover and he dies in her arms, the shock breaking her heart, and she lies down and dies by his side.
