The line riders are a body of men whose duties are similar to those of the famous Texas Rangers along the Mexican line. Their range is the wildest portion of the great northwest country and they ride the imaginary line that separates the United States from the Dominion of Canada. In the discharge of their duties they are brought into active contact with the most desperate criminals. The particular incident upon which this story is based, deals with opium smuggling, and shows how Captain Bob MacDonald, after having run the smugglers down, falls a victim to a carefully laid plot to put him out of the way. He is accused by one of his captives of having deliberately murdered his partner. Kitty Wells, a young homesteader, whom Bob is deeply interested in, sends for him with the intention of turning him over to the Canadian authorities. Bob comes to her and she relieves him of his gun. She, however, is convinced that Bob is not a cowardly murderer when he shows her the wounds that he had received in the gunfight. As she is about to return his gun, one of the smugglers who had escaped and had been following Bob, enters the room and tries to kill him. After a desperate struggle, Bob manages to disarm and arrest him. After a series of peculiar circumstances they discover that the evidence against Bob had been trumped up by the dead smuggler.
