The Hogans, though poor and illiterate, are good people with certain high minded ideas, and Spike is not long in their company before he "cuts out" all of his old pals, etc. His reformation is practically complete when he "spruces up" and secures honest employment as a plumber. With the earnings of his first job, he buys a $1.98 "diamond" engagement ring, and proudly presents it to Lizzie. Dreams of the future were never more rosy than those indulged in by Lizzie and Spike, when suddenly their happiness is marred by Spike's arrest. He is charged with having stolen his "diamond" ring from the home of wealthy Mrs. Rankin, whom he had visited that day in his capacity of plumber. Spike, Lizzie and the ring are dragged into court. Spike's past record is brought out and shown to Lizzie. As Spike is about to be convicted on the flimsy circumstantial evidence, a report reaches the court that the ring has been found.
