One day, he meets Albert Darnton, an old college friend, whom he invites home for dinner and introduces to his wife, Marie. Dinner is interrupted when the doctor is summoned by a sick patient, leaving Marie alone with Albert, who knew her when she was a cabaret singer in Chicago, Illinois. She is frightened by his advances and rushes to the bedroom, with Albert in pursuit. Dr. Holmes returns to find Albert with Marie and throws the intruder out. The disillusioned doctor then leaves his wife and renounces his profession, seeking solace in nature. He eventually finds work on the Egan ranch, outside the town of Broken Bone, and discovers that his employer is engaged in cattle rustling. When Marie becomes ill, a friend name Mary Galbraith notifies Dr. Holmes, who soon reconciles with his wife. He then informs the sheriff of Egan's secret life of crime, and defeats Albert in a fight.
