They are not interested in entitlement, but empowerment. They see blindness as a mere inconvenience, not a disability entitling them to special services. Seeing the reactions of airline attendants, transportation officials, and fellow travelers, though, shows how society as a whole has not readily embraced the idea of independent blind people. Lending their expert commentary in the film is Dr. Fred Schroeder, former Secretary for the Rehabilitation Services Administration; Dr. Floyd Matson, the late professor of American Studies at the University of Hawaii and author of Walking Alone, Marching Together, a history of the organized blind movement; and James Omvig, from the National Blindness Professionals Certification Board and author of Freedom for the Blind: The Answer is Empowerment.
