Twenty-five years later Elvina and the doctor return--she with a heavy veil over her face, and he a widower with a son, also a physician. When Dexter hears that Elvina is lonely, he wants to atone for his youthful folly and proposes marriage. Elvina not only refuses: she also lifts her veil to reveal a beautiful, unmarked face.
