It is retrieved by Prince Valdemir of Prebilof, who assumes its owner to be Oluf and falls in love with her. Ruth and Valdemir are separated, but meet again later, after the real Oluf has announced her engagement to Prince Gregory of Masavania. Refusing to believe she is not Ruth Townley, Valdemir imprisons her until she agrees to love him. Ruth turns down his proposal because she believes the real Oluf wishes to marry Valdemir in order to ally their kingdoms. Also, she wants to be loved as herself, not as a princess.
