After Jim is beaten in a fight by Paul, Jennie marries Paul and Jim leaves town. Five years later he returns to town as coastal inspector, and when he learns that Jennie and Paul are still married but Paul is out of work, Jim hires him as a lighthouse keeper but sends the couple to a remote, lonely, depressing lighthouse.
