He goes West to join his friend Dick, a successful rancher. He allows his weakness for drink to ruin him. Not knowing of Fred's degeneracy, Margaret persuades her parents to allow her to join him, at his request. In the West, she and Fred are married. She meets his friend Dick and they establish a mutual but legitimate interest in each other. He presents her with a fine horse. Margaret treats Fred's pal Pete, with whom he drinks and gambles, kindly because she recognizes him as a weakling dominated by Fred. In a drunken quarrel over cards, Fred abuses Pete. Margaret interferes and gets Pete out of the cabin. Fred strikes her. She mounts the horse Dick gave her and the animal takes her to his former master. Dick attends to her wounds. They both realize that she must return to her husband and Dick brings her back. In the meanwhile Pete, having seen Margaret pass with her face bleeding, hastens to Fred's cabin. Fred murderously attacks Pete. In the fight Pete kills Fred in self-defense. When Margaret and Dick arrive, Dick goes into the cabin and finds Fred lying dead upon the floor. There is a note stuck to his belt, left by Pete, saying he killed Fred and has gone to give himself up to the sheriff. Dick takes the note and goes out to Margaret. He shows her the note and when he reads it she falls backward into his arms in a dead faint. Dick reverently feels he must give her his protection and counsel in the hour of her distress.
