At first, this loss appears to bounce off of Ollie as his autism makes his expressive language stilted, but when his peers start to mock his seeming non-reaction, the cracks begin to show in his indifferent façade. While The Teacher Mr. Markel announces to the class about Cam's last day, the class starts showing him all the attention, and then his Classmate Myles asks who he will miss the most in the school. Cam pauses for awhile, and Mr. Markel snaps him back into thought, and cam says that he will miss Ollie the most. Myles starts gossiping with Carla, a sassy classmate, about Cam's answer, as she compares Cam to one of Ollies cars. Me. Markell explains to Carla how people can show their feelings differently, as she says to Mr. Markell, that Ollie "clearly doesn't give a shit" and the class gets shocked at Carla cussing in class. Ollie and Cam then play a game of Mancala during study hall, and Ollie flips over the game board while upset that cam is leaving. They made a bet on the past that of cam beats Ollie in a game of Mancala, he would be allowed to play with Ollie's sensory object, his red toy car. Ollie then refuses to give his toy car. Cam yells for the Co-teacher Ms. Katie, but she was too busy tutoring Myles and another classmate. She tells cam to hold on a minute and yells louder. Cam then takes a stapler, and chucks it across the classroom trying to hit Ms. Katie but it misses, then breaks the Mancala board in half. Myles flips out of his seat in shock of the incident, and cam starts having a meltdown. Ollie is removed from the classroom, so he wouldn't witness the commotion. At recess, Ollie and Cam are on the swingset talking, and then an elementary schooler tells Cam that the teacher told her to invite cam to play kickball, Cam Accepts, but Ollie refuses, getting Carla's attention and again tells Ollie that cam is not one of his cars. At the end of the school day, Ollie and Mr. Markell have a discussion about how it is hard about friends leaving, and think about the good things that will happen to Cam. At Carpool, Ollie and Cam say their goodbyes and embrace. when Ollie sits in the car and his mom asks how his school day was, he looks back and sees Cam's older brother talking to him, and then turns back again and Cam is gone, and replies to his mom " it's broken" The result is both messy and affecting, a momentary portrait of the end of a unique friendship. Utilizing a cast comprised of primarily autistic youth and adults, CIRCLES authentically showcases a day in the life of neurodivergent individuals, without any of the stereotypes and melodrama often highlighted in popular culture and cinema. In the end, the film emphasizes a simple truth: While we may have our differences in communication, our ability to feel emotion is universal. See less
