Shackleton is forced to abandon ship with his crew, their lifeboats, and what gear they can gather before the ship plunges below the Ice. Trapped in the middle of the Antarctic Ice pack they are forced to haul all of their gear and boats 346 miles to the edge of the ice pack only to be set adrift for five days in the open ocean before landing on Elephant Island. Whilst on Elephant Island Shackleton new because of how far they were from the nearest shipping lane and the lack of resources on the island they would not survive waiting for a rescue and decided to attempt to cross the 800-mile stretch of open ocean to south Georgia Island, a known fishing port, where they knew they would be able to find help. After they packed just enough supplies for the journey they set sail in a slightly modified life raft for their 15-day journey. Once they had arrived they were able to mount a rescue mission to Elephant Island to pick up the remaining crew, saving them all. Written by
