Porter gives him the enchantment in belief that he has never kissed someone, but he forgets that Carl already kissed Jane in the play. So instead of kissing Jane, Carl physically hurts her while trying, and ends up kissing Melissa instead, passing the enchantment over to her. It also turns out that he, now enchanted, can never kiss Jane again - unless the enchantment chain breaks.
