Between dances, during which he has been doing a strenuous "Black Bottom," he goes out to get punch. The widow takes this opportunity to call her son over to her and ask him why he hasn't been necking with Anne, Jack's daughter. If it wasn't for her efforts at hooking the old fish, she says, they would soon be starving. Anne overhears and tells Jack, but Jack says he is old enough to know love when he feels it. He takes the widow over under a canopy to continue his love making, but Anne spoils it by cutting the cords holding the canopy. Anne calls up her sweetheart, asking him to come over and help her protect papa from this designing adventuress, but Jimmie says he doesn't want to incur papa's wrath again. Anne tells him to put on a false mustache and come anyway; Jimmie agrees. The two of them succeed in interrupting the lovers until time for the guests to depart. Not to be foiled, however, the widow pretends to sprain her ankle on her way out. Jack, delighted, invites the widow and her son to stay all night. This nearly ruins Anne's plans, but she rises to the occasion and tells the widow that she will have to sleep in the room haunted by the spirit of her grandmother. The widow says she doesn't mind, and hobbles off upstairs with the loving aid of Jack. Later, Jack sneaks off to the garden with his ukulele. The widow, immediately after, sneaks down to the library where her son is sleeping, and Anne sees her, marveling that her "sprained" ankle has been cured so miraculously. While the widow is out of her room Anne goes in and does a shadow act on the curtain for papa's benefit in the garden below, where he is about to do a serenade with his ukulele. She takes off a wig, a wooden leg, and a corset under which she has tied pillows, for Jack's edification. Highly disillusioned, Jack returns to the house and runs into the widow. He is overjoyed to see her and know that it wasn't she who was doing the silhouette act in grandma's haunted room. He tells her to go to bed and sleep tight, and to pay no attention to the ghosts. This gives Anne an idea, so she and Jimmie both dress up in some of grandma's old dresses. Together they make things hot for papa and his flame. Finally things come to such a pass that the widow says she won't stay in this crazy house another minute. Jack overhears, discovers that her ankle is quite well, and indignantly demands to know who the dickens wants her there anyway. Jimmie grabs the son unknown to the rest, into another room, and puts the costume he has been wearing, on him. Anne gets out of hers, and they bring in the goofy son, saying that here is the ghost they want. Jack hustles the widow and the son to the door, tells Jimmie he will be happy to have another brainy man in the family, and everything is the picture of bliss as we fade out.
