He meets Oro San, a Japanese girl, and the two eventually fall in love. Oro San's father, Hioto, commands her to marry a Japanese officer named Iwata, but she refuses, hides aboard a launch, and is taken to Leeds' cruiser. Leeds discovers her and takes her back home. Iwata plots to have Leeds assassinated. With two men, Iwata meets Oro San and tells her that to save her lover's life, she must tell him she does not love him.
