Carroll escapes to a distant city, changes his name, and eventually gains much wealth. Many years elapse. His daughter, Ethel, goes to boarding school and there meets the daughter of Jackson, Grace, and invites her for a holiday visit. Grace and George, Ethel's brother, fall in love and decide to marry. Grace brings her father to Carroll's home, and the meeting of the two men is an intensely dramatic scene. Jackson bitterly arraigns Carroll, and refuses his consent to the marriage, returning home with heart-broken Grace. Some days later Carroll accidentally upsets a lamp, which explodes with terrific force, burning his face and blinding him. He bows resignedly to the blow, seeing in it the hand of Providence, which has visited upon him retribution for the errors of his youth. Accompanied by George he calls upon Jackson and begs him to bury his hatred, as vengeance has been dealt by another hand, and to permit their children to enjoy the happiness they craved. Grace and George add their pleadings and at length Jackson consents, shakes hands with Carroll and pledges his friendship. Thus the two old men, doomed to grope through darkness for the rest of their lives, are made happy in the knowledge that the path of their children would be lighted by perfect love.
