The latter's daughter, Gladys, becomes imbued with a desire to leave the quiet little town, and runs away to the city to seek employment on the stage. Her father is furious and disowns her. One day two little girls of a neighbor run to the parsonage in escaping from their father, who wishes to ship them. The Rev. Jenkins remonstrates with the angry man and explains to him that he should teach by love and forgiveness and not with the rod, and the father takes his girls in his arms and promises never to be harsh again. Gladys is soon disillusioned, being unable to secure employment, and penitently returns to her rooms. Jenkins orders her out, and when Williams intercedes for her he loses his temper. Williams, angry and disgusted at the religious hypocrisy of the older man who teaches his flock tenets which he refuses to apply to his own child, roundly scores Jenkins and impetuously tears the insignia of the order from around his neck and throws it on the table, exclaiming, "If that is your religion, I don't want it." Shocked to a cooler realization of his actions, Jenkins rushes out, calls back his daughter, takes her tenderly in his arms, and warmly shakes the hand of the young minister who showed him the true light.
