His wife receives word that her parents are coming. Fearing that they will disinherit her if they find her in trouble with her husband, she engages Arthur, the French maid's beau, to impersonate her husband. Going to the kitchen, Arthur finds his girl in tears. He explains his familiarity with her mistress and pacifies her with kisses. Pa-in-law discovers his love affair with the servant but passes it off. Later the husband returns and sees his wife in the embrace of a strange man. He puts on the butler's uniform and serves dinner. His wife, horrified by his unexpected return, goes to the kitchen to explain and pacify him. Her mother finds her in the embrace of the butler. They all go to bed. Arthur goes into the bedroom with Mrs. Ruff, but when the "butler" enters, he dives out the window, to be picked up and nursed back to consciousness by the maid, while ma-in-law tiptoes into the bedroom and is horrified to find her daughter again in the arms of the butler.
