The "real" version was not approved, so they must rehearse without being observed, which requires many subterfuges. Under the cover of an "attack," Lizzie takes cotton balls from Greg's desk and even brings in a small tree from the garden when taken out to recover. Karen's interview about Pat's parole predicament produces publicity and a confrontation between Greg and Mrs. Davidson. Doreen bakes a Christmas cake for Lizzie, soaks it in port and tries to deliver it. Vera is at the gate and brings it in, discarding the cake, but uncharacteristically hiding the card so that Doreen will not get punished. She gives Lizzie the card, but warns she should not complain about the cake it mentions, for Doreen's sake. The play is so insulting that the officers walk out, and the women's performance trails off because it's now pointless.
