One morning when Ray stepped into the office after his honeymoon, he was shocked to learn that his uncle would pay him a visit very shortly. He hardly had time to finish the message when in stepped the jolly old gent. Ray, who was not an advocate of preparedness, was at a loss what to do, for he was sure that his uncle would want to see his educated son. Babies in town were kind of scarce, and there was only one alternative and that was to get his undersized partner to pose as the child. Luckily for his partner, his wife was out of town, and it was a question of sacrificing his dignity and acting the part of the child, or else lose his future income, which was made up mainly of the money sent in by the uncle from time to time. A pink linen suit with nice socks and small booties made the change perfect and you never saw a more handsome cherub. Ray, acting the proud father, brought the supposed son home and presented him to his uncle, who was very much delighted to meet him. To the uncle the child was abnormal as far as intelligence was concerned and no doubt he felt that the money sent to his nephew was being used to a good advantage. The child could smoke, play cards and in fact do everything that a man of mature age could do. Things were running very nicely for a while and Ray's wife became accustomed to holding the supposed child on her lap and hugging and kissing him, until one fine morning in stepped Ray's partner's wife, demanding her husband. The poor fellow found himself in an awful predicament, for she caught him just as he was sitting on the lap of his partner's wife and playing the baby. It did not take long for his wife to recognize him in his make-up, and a terrible rumpus ensued. Uncle, on the other hand, almost succumbed to heart failure when he saw what had happened and it was only after a lengthy explanation that his nephew straightened matters out to the satisfaction of all.
