Word is sent to them that he is dead, and his money is left to them, provided they marry. Stella is to occupy the family mansion during the courtship. At first Dr. Webster seems well impressed with the girl. Complications arise, however, when the two go to a circus and Dr. Webster sees Kate, an equestrienne, with whom he becomes infatuated. While riding through the burning hoops on the back of a fiery charger, Kate falls and is badly hurt. Dr. Webster attends her until she is well. His infatuation is noticed by Stella, who is loathe to allow anything to interfere with the legacy. His attentions to Kate are also resented by Pietro, the Italian ringmaster, who is enamored of her. The doctor calls upon Stella, declaring that he will give up the legacy in order to marry Kate, the girl of his heart. The uncle, peering through a slot in the door, gets a clue of his niece's real character which he sees her rage. As a last resort, Stella visits Kate at the circus and tells her that she, Kate, is preventing Dr. Webster from getting a large fortune. But just as the girl is about to give up, the doctor comes and denounces Stella. Stella conspires with Pietro to "dope" Kate's medicine that night before she goes into the ring. The plans are discussed in the mansion and overheard by Giles. Pietro pours the opiate into Kate's medicine and, while doing so, is seen by Fanny, Kate's sister, whom he binds and gags. While performing her act, Kate is overcome by dizziness and comes near losing her life as she is leaping through the hoops, but is saved by Fanny's admirer, and all ends happily when the doctor nurses her back to health and Giles comes to life to praise his nephew and denounce his niece.
