The young soldier meets a Union scooting party, and wounded, he finds sanctuary at the Allen mansion. The house is subsequently searched by the Union party, but Virginia Allen, by conducting the officer through a secret door in the wainscoting of the dining room, saves him. She then takes him away and hides him in a cave. She takes General Lee's dispatch from the lining of Archer's coat and tucks it in her hair, and then rides away with the Union soldiers toward the Confederate lines. She takes this document to Gen. Jackson without difficulty and he is deeply grateful. Eventually she returns to her own home and finds Lieutenant Archer recovered. They plight their troth and he goes back to the field of war.
