This is founded upon an ancient Spanish custom which is still in vogue in the rural regions of southern Spain. It is considered the playing of the part purifies the subject of original sin, and completely regenerates Magdalene, a dancer in a café. She sees Jack Wilde, a hated "gringo" whom she immediately loves with all the ardor of her primitive nature and he honorably returns her love, but his father frowns upon any such misalliance so emphatically that the poor girl is driven to despair. She is given an opportunity to appear in the passion play and takes advantage of this to secure regeneration and grace in the eyes of her obdurate parent: but it works the other way, for he is a practical party and does not believe in such a method for establishing the standard of caste. Her old lover, mad with rage, tries to take her by force. She turns sadly away from the door of the American's hotel, but is stopped by the kind old padre. He induces her to forsake the world and enter a convent, so that her redemption becomes truly complete. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
