The children escape and climb to the roof of a freight car. As the train is pulling out of the depot the pursuing father falls beneath the wheels and is killed. The youngsters arrive in a great city and the little mother takes up the burden of life for herself and brother. In the years that follow the boy begins to follow in the footsteps of his father, the girl loyally stays by him, even to the extent of becoming a thief to save him from the result of his folly.
