He asks her to marry him and she accepts. Mr. King's daughter Mary, away at boarding school, does not want her father to remarry and takes a dislike to Miss Graham. She happens to read an advertisement in the paper, inserted by Miss Graham, stating that she wants a housemaid. Mary works out a way to get better acquainted with her future stepmother, and as vacation time is near, she writes to her father that she will spend her holidays with a friend; this ruse will enable her to accept the position with Miss Graham. Everything works out just right, and Mary finds herself equipped with cap and apron, a full-fledged lady's maid in the service of her father's fiancée, whom Mary finds to be a very delightful and charming person. Mary has a narrow escape when her father calls to see Miss Graham, and recognizes his daughter, who warns him not to tell her "Mistress," after she has acquainted her father with her purpose in going out to service. During her employment with Miss Graham Mary becomes ill; as Miss Graham tenderly nurses her back to health, the patient gets a full insight into the lady's sweetness and kindness. When vacation is over, Mary leaves Miss Graham's home and returns to school. Her friends have been waiting for a recital of her experience, which she makes in one emphatic declaration that her father's intended wife is one of the best, sweetest ladies in the world.
