His sweetheart Molly rings him up to remind him not to forget to buy the engagement ring. George groans as he receives the message, and realizes that he cannot buy that ring unless he gets a job. He goes to the newsstand to look over advertisements in the "Help Wanted" column. At last he sees: "Wanted, young man, handsome, attractive to the ladies, for position of great trust. Salary $150.00 weekly. Apply I. Hitchem, Broker, Suite No. 3345-3346, Bolivar Building." Outside the office there is a line of applicants of various types. After a while, George's turn comes, and he is allowed to enter the office. Hitchem asks him to be seated, and as George sees a lot of women's photographs piled up on Hitchem's desk, he says: "I thought this was a broker's office?" Hitchem answers: "So it is. I'm a marriage broker." George starts to leave, but Hitchem detains him and tells him that all he had to do is to meet a lot of women and pose as a handsome husband; he must propose to each applicant for a husband and place an engagement ring on each one's finger. Among those to whom George becomes engaged are middle-aged spinster Julia Cutey, and mother-of-five Mrs. Kiddley. In each case the wedding day is set for some future date. Molly places a photograph of George on her parlor table. Shortly afterwards her aunt, Julia Cutey, pays her a call, and announces that she has come to the city to be married, having secured a husband through an advertisement in a matrimonial paper. Julia, happening to see George's picture on the parlor table, says: "That's his picture!" Molly laughs says this is impossible, as it is a picture of her fiancé. After Aunt Julia departs, the maid announces her Aunt Susan from Rahway, and Mrs. Kiddley and her brood of children enter the parlor. Mrs. Kiddley tells Molly that she has come to town to be married. One of the kids sees George's picture and exclaims: "Look, mama, here's a picture of our new popper!" Molly again declares this to be impossible; it's her fiancé. Just as Mrs. Kiddley leaves, George arrives to a warm welcome. All goes well until George pulls out one of the Hitchem's stock engagement rings and puts it on her finger. Molly is struck by the ring's resemblance to those worn by her two aunts. She is about to denounce him, but makes up her mind to remain silent for now. After George leaves, she picks up a copy of the matrimonial Aunt Julia left there and sees the advertisement inserted by Hitchem to furnish any lady with a handsome husband. She goes to Hitchem's office and is ushered into the reception room. George scarcely looks at Molly as he draws her towards him in order to kiss her, but she pulls away from him and raises her veil. He recognizes her and falls back dumbfounded. After mutual explanations, all is forgiven and George embraces Molly, but their troubles are not over yet. Mrs. Kiddley, with her children, and Julia Cutey arrive at Hitchem's private office. To avoid meeting them, George locks the reception-room door and he and Molly escape by another door. However, they encounter many other female candidates who make a rush for George, and after much difficulty they finally escape from the building. Out of revenge, all the women rush into Hitchem's office and nearly murder him. After their escape, George and Molly hunt up a clergyman and have the matrimonial knot securely tied.
