The two "moss-backs" find much that is new and novel in the up-to-dateness of the hotel. They think everybody is trying to get their money, and their efforts to outwit the bellboys, elevator and other employees of the hotel are ludicrous. Hasherino is the headwaiter of the dining room and his fine, dashing appearance has won the hearts of all the female contingent. Samanthy falls a victim to his politeness and contrasts his dashing appearance to Bilkins, to the disadvantage of the latter. Marie is the waitress, and she makes a hit with Bilkins. While Bilkins is carrying on a flirtation with Marie, his wife is doing the same with Hasherino, and each couple manage to make a date to meet that night. Bilkins and his wife are both trying to figure some way to leave each other without disclosing their errand, and each is glad when the other leaves. Marie tells Bilkins a hard luck tale and gets his sympathy to such an extent that he loosens up the purse-strings and gives her a roll of money. Hasherino plays on the heart of Samanthy, and in the absorption of his lovemaking he manages to deprive her of several pieces of jewelry. Each of the couples plans an elopement for the following night and manage to return to their room without being discovered. Next day husband and wife prepare for the elopement and their efforts to avoid being found out by each other cause many complications. At last dark arrives and Bilkins and wife retire to their room. Bilkins hangs his suitcase out the window, while Samanthy hides her clothes beneath the bed. On a pretext of going outside to smoke Bilkins escapes and leaves a note with the clerk to deliver to his wife in fifteen minutes. He then goes to the appointed trysting place. Samanthy gets ready for flight and leaves a note on the table for Bilkins. Hasherino and Marie, who is really his wife, count the proceeds of their hard luck tale, finding themselves very far ahead, decide to leave on the first train. Marie writes a note to Bilkins and arranges it so that he cannot miss it. Her husband writes Samanthy, telling of his marriage and thanking her for the jewels. The wily pair safely escape. Bilkins, nervously waiting, decides to sit down, and does so only to hastily rise. He finds Marie's note; it has been fastened to a pin and left on the seat. Samanthy finds the note from her "lover," and realizing she has lost out, determines to get her note before Bilkins. Bilkins breathlessly rushes to the clerk and asks for the note. He learns it was left in his room. Husband and wife, each on the trail of their note, come face to face in the room, and there is much maneuvering to get their respective notes without the knowledge of the other. They finally get the wrong notes, but tear them up without reading, and a happy reconciliation follows. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
