When she fails to secure work after long hours of tramping her heart grows sad. Too proud to tell the truth, she writes to her folks saying that she has met with success; then she throws herself on the bed and sobs out her anguish. In the room next to hers is a girl of a different type, Irene Wallace, a model for famous artist Rupert Strong. Hearing the sobs, she seeks out the room and tries to comfort the girl. Struck with her pretty face she takes Jane the following day and introduces her to her employer. Strong hires her to pose for him. In her new position she meets a class of men she is unaccustomed to; she is fascinated with their reckless ways and gallant attention. One particularly attracts her: Harry Charlton, son of the late Barley King, who is burning up his father's fortune by riotous living. Jane is tempted with costly gowns and but for the advice of her friend would accept them. A letter from her mother seems to steady her, though not to the extent that she refuses Charlton's invitation to one of his freak dinners. It is her birthday. Though dressed rather simply, her demureness charms the men and she is the center of attraction at the ball. Unknown to Jane her mother has arrived in the city to be with her on the night of her birthday. Irene, fearful for Jane's welfare, decides to take her mother to her. In the meantime Charlton has found one of Jane's letters written by the mother. The simple, homey prayers penned by the mother for her daughter's safety pierce the man's cast-iron stoicism; he determines that no harm shall come to her. He commands the orgy to cease just as the mother arrives. In the hall Charlton meets the mother and asks for her daughter's hand. He returns with Jane to the drawing room, where the girls' bare necks are covered and the wine removed and introduces his future wife and her mother. All the guests cluster around the old lady, who tells them about her child when she was a little girl. It is the beginning of a new life for many of them.
