However the father has more ambitious plans for his daughter than allowing her to marry Hart. The father frowns upon Hart's suit, while he encourages the suit of Lord Darby, a rich member of a decadent aristocracy. The father is gouty, and goes to Arrowhead, Hot Springs, with his daughter, Lord Darby, and a chaperon. Bob Hart follows and elopes with Betty while the gouty father is taking a mud bath, Lord Darby reports the proceeding to the father, who worms out of his mud bath, and gives chase. He comes upon the two lovers just after they have been married. Overtures of peace are finally made with success, when Bob consents to cleanse the father of mud.
