Smithers, a bachelor passing the store, hears the baby crying and, seeing no one in sight, picks him up to comfort him and absentmindedly strolls away with him in his arms. Kate, a spinster, happens along with her dog and seeing a sign "No Dogs Allowed,'' and wanting to enter the bargain sale, places her dog in Josephine's baby's pram. Josephine comes out of the store, places her bundles in the carriage and wheels the dog home, where to her consternation she discovers her baby is gone with the dog in his place. She phones her husband, who rushes home from his office, and the couple rush to the nearest station house wheeling the dog, where they report their loss. Meanwhile, the spinster exits the store to find the carriage and her dog gone, and she rushes madly off in search of it. A stranger she questions directs her to the police station to which she immediately goes, meeting Josephine and her husband with the dog, which they refuse to give up until their baby is returned. While all this is happening, old Smithers has returned to the store; finding the perambulator gone he enters and inquires of all the women buyers if the baby is theirs. They leave in a huff and old Smithers, not knowing what to do, takes the baby to his home. Becoming alarmed, he decides to take it to a police station, but is stopped on the street by a policeman who has been sent out in search of the baby and taken by him to the same station that holds Josephine, her husband, Kate, and the dog. Explanations follow. Josephine clasps her baby to her breast, as Kate does her dog. Old Smithers apologizes and the "Bargain Day" ends happily for all.
