The queen is loved both by Prince Frederick and the Count Michael, and the prince seems to hold the most of her favor. The queen is tired of court life and often wishes she could get someone to take her place for a short time in order that she may have what she calls some fun. Marcia and the queen meet one day and become very friendly because of their likeness. After a great deal of persuasion the queen finally induces Marcia to take her place as queen for a week. The councilors, thinking Marcia the real queen, inform her that she must marry within the week. Before leaving the Madcap Queen had warned Marcia not to flirt with the prince, but the warning is superfluous, as she takes a great liking to Count Michael and the prince finds himself slighted. He cannot understand what he thinks a sudden change of heart on the queen's part, and after catching the Count embracing what he thinks is the queen, he seeks the count out and insults him. They arrange the duel for that evening in the count's rooms. That evening Marcia is wandering about the castle and through a mistake gets in the count's rooms. Before she can escape the parties to the duel come in and engage in a fight. Spellbound, the girl watches them fight and in the struggle the curtains are torn down, disclosing the girl. She fears for the count's life and in the excitement goes to his arms. Chagrined, Prince Frederick leaves them together. Sir Henry Hutt comes in and arouses the anger of the Count, who, in anger, knocks him down. The day of the wedding arrives and Hutt, enraged because Count Michael had struck him, incites the populace against the crown. Prince Frederick calls to extend his apologies, but finds that the "queen" and Count Charles have gone for a motor ride. The councilors announce that unless the queen comes back by twelve o'clock the throne will be transferred to Prince Frederick. The villagers are beginning to cause trouble and the hour of twelve has almost arrived when the Madcap Queen returns from her vacation. She finds a note that the Prince had written her, telling her that as she seems to favor the Count, he is going away, as he cannot stand to think of her love being given to someone else. Hearing the noise outside, the queen hurries out and is greeted by cheers from the assembled villagers. The Prince is so overcome with astonishment that his habitual reserve is swept away and he actually smiles. The queen is so happy at making the Prince smile that she impulsively embraces him, and as the cheers are still ringing the Count and the girl he thinks is queen return. Explanations follow and the Count decides that he is well suited with his choice, even if she is not queen, while the Prince and the Madcap Queen receive the congratulations of all.
