Through innovative rehabilitation programs such as Freedom Kennels and Pawsitive Directions, inmates from all backgrounds are given the opportunity to transform shelter dogs into adoptable loving pets or simply care for animals boarding at the prison kennels. The unconditional love and companionship of the dogs allows the women to learn compassion, gain self-esteem, and develop a sense of accomplishment on their often rocky path to rehabilitation. Set in the only two Canadian women's prisons with canine programs - the Nova Institution For Women in Nova Scotia and the Burnaby Correctional Centre for Women in British Columbia, this documentary captures the unique caring relationship that develops between inmates and the dogs they come to love.
