But appearances are deceptive. Shortly after the 14th wedding anniversary, Susanne receives a surprise visit from the young bookseller Bettina, who explains without further ado that she is expecting a child from Lukas. A world collapses for Susanne. In order to distance herself from her husband, she flees to Amsterdam to live with the writer Jonathan Kluivert, whose book she is currently translating. When Markus also admits an affair to his wife Johanna, her marriage also falls into crisis. But unlike Susanne, Johanna sees her husband's missteps as an opportunity for their partnership, which has become routine over the years.
