The scene changes to the grounds around the palace. An odd-looking tree appears in the foreground and turns into a hobgoblin, which shakes its arms at the Sultan. The Sultan seizes his sword and stabs at the feirce looking object, when it turns into Mephistopheles, who seizes the Sultan and places him on a scaffold, and just as they are about to dispatch him, the dream ends; and he finds himself once more on his comfortable couch.
