From Lew the butler, Eveline learns that John, some years earlier, had saved a young man named Alexander Vernon from suicide and then took him into his business firm as a partner. John planned to marry Louise Palmer, a schoolteacher, but upon meeting Alexander, she fell deeply in love and married him instead. The partnership dissolved, John then became consumed with the desire for revenge. Armed with this knowledge and a great understanding of human nature, Eveline gradually effects a change in John, and in the end, he forgives his old enemies and happily marries his nurse.
