Mark later protects Old Honeycutt from the scheming of Gratton, who wants to discover the location of Old Honeycutt's mine. Gratton tries to force Gloria into marriage, but Tom forestalls him by marrying Gloria himself. Gloria soon longs for city life and, resenting Mark for the abrupt manner of their marriage, returns to San Francisco.
